A new media channel for Academies launches…with help from some talented young people

Students from Academies around the country are helping develop a new online media channel which will be launched at a special student conference on Friday.

The channel will enable students to publish video, podcasts and blogs as part of a national network of Academies. At the conference over a hundred and fifty young people will get hands on in making their own podcasts, taking part in discussions and posting video comments on the new channel.

But this is just a start, throughout the year Academies in the network will have access to further activities and training for teachers and young people, competitions and other great initiatives to celebrate young peoples talent across all the academies.

The new Academy Channel and the Academy Student Conference have been co-designed by young people who have chosen the three themes: aspirations, life outside school and academy life. The young people will also get to name the new channel and win a fantastic iPod touch courtesy of Apple.

The channel and conference are being delivered by a partnership between Radiowaves and the Academy Networks Directorate to ensure young peoples voices are heard and responded to by the schools.

Tim Riches from Radiowaves says:

“Using technology which is relevant and fun for young people is a powerful way to raise their motivation. In addition to impacting on ICT, media and literacy we are working with Academies to help them use this technology as a lever to raise aspirations and engagement across a wide range of curriculum and extended school activities.

There is a huge amount of creativity happening within Academies across the country. We will be continuing to work in partnership with the Academy Networks Directorate to showcase and celebrate this talent on Radiowaves throughout the year”
